The green committee began in 2024, with the goal of helping our Wilson community become more environmentally aware, while also offering more nature-based activities for families.
Each school day, as part of the morning announcements, kids get to hear Wilson Goes Wild. Wilson Goes Wild covers a different earth/nature-based topic each week. Some examples include learning about squirrels, hibernation, migration, honeybees, fall leaves, etc. Wilson Goes Wild also offers challenge weeks, where kids participate by submitting trivia question answers to their teacher to earn PAWS or raffle tickets.
The green committee provides “Thinking Green” tips for parents and caregivers in each month’s PAWS PTG newsletter. The intent is to highlight important environmental facts, while also offering green tips that are easy to fold into daily life.
One of the main goals of the green committee is to help the Wilson community to be more aware and thoughtful about our collective impact on the environment.
Currently, the green committee is working with the PTG to request funding for reusable items such as large water coolers, hot beverage urns, and compostable single-use items for large school events. Water coolers will eliminate the school’s previous reliance on plastic water bottles, which not only is better for the planet… it’s also more cost effective in the long run. Single-use items can generate an incredible amount of waste and that waste will outlive us by about four lifetimes, so the more consciences we can be, the better.

Some students participated in a “No Waste Lunch” day, in an attempt to become more aware of single-use packaging, and food waste. Students also created Earth Day signs to hang around the school.
The green committee provided pollinator plant seeds to the school for a student planting. Classes planted and tended to their plants in their classrooms, and then participated in the final planting outside once they were ready. The students did a great job and the pollinator garden was happily used by wildlife all summer long.
A fun meet-up for families to get outside and have some fun in the fresh air. The paddleboard party took place at Fish Lake.
This meet-up took place in the spring just as the balsam root flowers were blooming along the bluff trail. Families hiked together and stopped along the way to learn about flowers, plants, trees, and wildfire.

We’d love to grow our green committee and keep it going as families transition out of Wilson and move on to middle school, so if you’d like to join the committee, we’d love to have you!
